Gulliver's Travels Revisited
Kirsten Leenaars

"You see, when night falls and you close your eyes to sleep and dream, I have seen the things that you can only dream about. I have been there. I was lost at sea for a long time. But I have been there. Oh yes. All the way and back."                                Gullivers Travels, Jonathan Swift (1726)

In Gulliver's Travels Revisited, the Lange Voorhout is the setting for a conceptual adaptation of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. As the visitor to the exhibition, you are both the narrator and the actor. You will read sentences from the book that relate to the desire for adventure, personal relationships and how as an individual you try to find your position in the greater whole. In order to bring the story to life in an entirely different setting and time than where and when the original story took place, we are appealing to your own fantasy and empathy. The locations for these shots will be situated around the exhibition grounds and ensure an unexpected combination of the world in which the video is recorded and the world described in the book. The final film will be shown in the project space of the Bureau for Contemporary Adventure. As a viewer, you will be challenged to once again take up a position in relation to your own environment, your fears and your desires.
