Food Rave
Maurice Bogaert en Mathijs Lieshout
A living 'Vanitas', an edible tableau vivant organized by an underground cooking avant-garde at a secret location. Merely a hospitable reception or Faust in the kitchen? An uneasy future image or cheerful post-baroque?

In a not so far away future; the Calvinism that the Netherlands is so proud of is thriving. In addition to drugs and cigarettes, alcohol, coffee and sugar are now also taboo. The exclusive purpose of food is nutritional: soy chunks with protein juice.
The Public Health Service exercises strict control.
At the same time, the underground cook organises avant-garde secret Food Raves. Mimeographed flyers containing cryptic descriptions inform the initiated where they should be. They convene under bridges, at drafty parking places and in old sheds. The thud of bass drums sounds from afar. Once inside, an overwhelming mix of colour, smells and sounds incites the senses. FOOD! Displayed on a provisional and rapidly movable kitchen unit as a post-apocalyptic Vanitas, a mortar tub full of oysters and a number of jerry-cans full of champagne. An event that will continue for as long as the mortar tub is deep or until the Public Health Service gets wind of it.
